The other day when Petcretary was out in the yard, she found this very startling 'thing' that she nearly stepped on! Its a Luna Moth....but sadly it wasn't alive anymore...despite the fact that *she* did not step on it...
They only live about a week, so it wasn't too surprising to her...the surprise was in seeing one at all, in the 37 years she's been here she has never seen one except in pictures!
Here is a link to some info about these pretty moths:

Too bad in death, this moth's wings covered the little moonlike spots from which it gets its name. |
And since its still the American long weekend...here are some other festive selfies from us pups!
Sorry about the bad lighting in these images...they've been 'fixed up' plenty to try and better them...
Hope you all have a quiet and great week ahead...as of this writing the neighbors two doors down decided it would be fun to have the big boomers there...Dalton seems relaxed enough, but Benji is cowering on my feet under the desk...poor dude; hope it will be over soon.
We've joined up with all the other Sunday Selfies at The Cat On my Head, who host this hop each week! Thanks so much, we love it and we love all of you! |
What an extraordinary creature! It looks so beautiful even though it has passed.

That moth is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDearest Ingrid,
ReplyDeleteThat sure was a very rare encounter—such a beautiful Luna Moth!
Love those selfies, Dalton looks as if he knows he is modeling for a selfie.
Glad those fireworks are over with, so many lost dogs that escaped—a very sad aftermath.
Hugs,
Mariette + Kitties
Nature is truly wonderful. So much beauty crammed into such a short life. But still beautiful in death, which is quite something special.
ReplyDeleteLove your selfies, may your week be less scary and loud.

Mummy is a little nervous of moths, for some reason. She prefurrs flutterbies. Weird! Maybe because most of the moths She sees are just dull brown or beige. The Luna Moth, howeffur, looks more like a flutterby!
ReplyDeleteThat Luna moth is so beautiful. We learned lots about them from that link. You two are so cute in your patriotic outfits. We hope the booms from the neighbors end soon.
ReplyDeletePoor moth, it really was gorgeous. You two are gorgeous too and I hope you get peace and quiet from here on out.
ReplyDeleteMom has seen a Luna moth a couple of times and both times, she felt pretty special to have seen them. You guys look great in your patriotic attire!
ReplyDeleteOh I enjoyed seeing the moth. I have been fortunate in seeing one two times. I didn't know what it was until I looked it up. And you two look like a zillion dollars all duded up for the 4th! You two are mom's most fave dogs. Truly.
ReplyDeleteLulu: "Our Dada says they used to see these around the house back in New York. He says they are huge and beautiful."
ReplyDeleteCharlee: "So lucky! I would love to have a giant moth to play with!"

Nobby.
We have never seen a Luna Moth. It sure is a pretty color. Timber spotted a black butterfly with yellow spots on Mom's penta the other day. He watched it for a bit and then decided to taste it. He actually got it in his mouth, but he did not like the feel of that fluttering. He opened his mouth and out flew the butterfly. Mom wishes she caught it on video.
