Flowers! That Means It's Really Spring!

We've had some nice springish days in these parts the past week. The grass is greening up; (oh dear that means the lawnmower will have to come out of hibernation...); the scylla are coming up all over the lawn and the two lonely crocuses decided to bloom, too. We used to have a whole lot more of them in all kinds of yellows and purples, but only these little white ones have come through. We don't know for sure but some critter seems to have gobbled them up. No grape hyacinths yet, and the daffs are still tightly closed. The tulips have come up, but no flower stalks yet. We still had cold nights in the 20sF, so they are waiting for a bit warmer temps to help them along. All the various shrubs are showing little leaflets...and soon the honeysuckle shrubs will be in bloom, too. The birds love those shrubs, though they are rather messy things, but we just let them be, they are in the back woods area, which we allow mostly to just do its thing, though we try to get rid of the most weeds that are full of cling ons and or invasive.

Crocus ~ growing in the middle of our sedum!
Scylla
Here in this photofail, you can see how they are just all over the place, it's hard not to step on them walking in those areas where they are proliferating.

This is a Hairy Bittercress, (Cardamine hirsuta). It's all over the place, and seems to want to take over they whole yard...so petcretary has been pulling them up...then she found out they are edible and can be eaten in salads or cooked. Who knew!?! So she might let a few grow and then sample them to see how yummy (or not) they are!

Petcretary went to see the orthopedic peeps the other day, and now after 6 1/2 weeks her cast is off and she can use her arm/wrist as tolerated. However there is  noticeably less range of motion in it, and there is sharp pain with certain motions, as well as stiffness and still a bit of swelling. So...she will still be off work for the whole month of April, and have therapy to regain full use...before she'll be able to return to work. While that annoys the work peeps, it makes us pups happy!! BOL!

We were out in the backwoods with her the other day, when it was warm and pleasant, and we found this big tree with holes in it. Likely made by squirrels and woodpeckers. Another bigger tree has a huge hole in it near the top, where one year a swarm of bees was in there and we could see the honey dripping out of it, though *she* didn't dare to get too close, not having beekeepers gear...

I, Dalton had to go into investigation mode...

I smell something interesting in here.
Maybe I can find it in here...if only I could reach it.
Benji, I need your help!
Shucks, He didn 't come to help me...
Oh, well, we got a treat anyways...
Thanks, Petcretary, it was yummy!

  1. We are getting nice Spring weather too with temperatures around 60F. Night times are still cold though for the time of year. I am glad Petcretary has her cast off now and that the physiotherapy improves her movement in her wrist. I remember the first time I broke an ankle, when the cast came off I thought I would walk normally again, but I couldn't even bend my ankle!

  3. Your flowers are so pretty! We don't see nearly enough crocus. I guess we'll just have to plant some in the autumn! We are so happy that Petcretary's arm is healing!

  4. We are glad Petcretary's plaster cast is off and hope that her arm will fully heal before long.
We love your flowers. We don't have a garden and the only flowers Mummy seems to be able to grow are geraniums - some of which are now in bloom on her bedroom windowsill. But the wildflowers are all over the place - buttercups, cyclamens, gladioli, lupins and many others whose names We don't know (and neither does Mummy - MOL).

  5. Love the flower photos. I now have hundreds of mini daffs in full bloom over the back wild area. We have 3/4 acre in a rural community in a low population farming county. So We love having the trees we do. But with a herd of 20 deer in our yard any time of any day, the 12 years we've lived here, I'm limited in plant choice. This winter I potted tulip bulbs on the patio and put chicken wire over them. They have sprouted! And now the catio fence just went up, I can take the wire off. And they can bloom without fear of deer. My grape hyacinths are budding but the deer eat the leaves like candy so they often bloom without greenery, lol. I'm lucky to be retired. I fell off my bike in August of '23 and broke my left hand. Probably better to heal than a broken wrist. Good luck for the next month.

  8. Lulu: "That's great news about Petcretary's cast! We hope she continues to feel better and the PT gets her all her motion back!"
Java Bean: "Ayyy, what was in that hollow tree, Dalton? Was it a chipmunk? I bet it was a chipmunk ..."

  9. Physical therapy or occupational therapy is the bestest thing!
Was lucky that my break was my left hand, and I'm right-handed, so I was able to stay at work, and found the therapy office less than a mile away, so I scheduled visits on my lunch hour.
Just so you know, I was severely dismayed when I first began, because the exercises were so basic, but I quickly got the gist of rehabbing the tendons and muscles slowly.
    Good luck!

  11. So glad to hear your mum is out of her cast. Joints are always stiff (and too often painful) following a break. Hopefully PT will help her gain full moisture. We'll keep our paws crossed. Lovely signs of spring. We actually had lovely rain this weekend-yay! I'm sure it'll start heading your way soon.

  12. We had beautiful weather too, and had to mowed the grass for two times already, but we're happy Spring is in here and finally in your place too, Dalton and Benji. We're also glad that your mommies wrist is getting better. Granny's quervain thumb also gives her trouble when she makes a bad move, but it's temporary and will get completely before we know it😸We love it when the flowers come up on places where they're not expected...MOL...You two look gorgeous as effurr, sweet doggies. We wonder who lives in the tree, maybe you find it out soon😸Double Pawkisses for a Happy Day to all of you🐾😽💞

  16. It is great to har Mum is doing OK and the cast is off. I know its frustrating for wok but I am guessing they will want someone nimble, flexible and able to move properly?

  18. Your spring blooms are so pretty. We have pretty purple hyacinths in our front landscape beds. Mom just loves the smell.

We hope your arm mobility and strength comes back soon. Mom had a very severe break right above the elbow and had surgery to put in screws and a titanium plate. She never had a cast and the surgeon put her in PT/OT the day after her surgery to avoid all that stiffness and such. Unfortunately this happened right at the start of Covid 2020 and she didn't get to go for very long for her OT sessions. She has pretty good range of motion and strength, but it could have been so much better if the times had been different.

    You pups are looking great.
